<li>Check that trailer air connectors are sealed and free from damage. </li>
<li>Make sure glad hands are locked in place, free of damage or air leaks. </li>
<li>Make sure the trailer electrical plug is firmly seated and locked in place. </li>

Header Board </h4>

<li>If equipped, check the header board to see that it is secure, free of damage, and strong enough to contain cargo. </li>
<li>If equipped, the canvas or tarp carrier must be mounted and fastened securely. </li>
<li>On enclosed trailers, check the front area for signs of damage such as cracks, bulges, or holes. </li>

<li>Check that the landing gear is fully raised, has no missing parts, crank handle is secure, and the support frame is not damaged. </li>

Doors/Ties/Lifts </h4>

<li>If equipped, check that doors are not damaged. Check that doors open, close, and latch properly from the outside. </li>
<li>Check that ties, straps, chains, and binders are secure. </li>
<li>If equipped with a cargo lift, look for leaking, damaged or missing parts and explain how it should be checked for correct operation. </li>
<li>Lift should be fully retracted and latched securely. </li>

Look for cracks, broken welds, holes or other damage to the frame, cross members, box, and floor. </div>

CDL College is proud to participate in a Truck Safety Campaign with the Colorado State Patrol. We provided the semi-truck for the State Patrol's ride along demonstration with news crews to demonstrate a truckers view of the busy Denver, CO streets. CDL College instructor Steve Heany is driving the truck while Colorado State Trooper Robert Lew Thomas is providing the commentary.<br />

Colorado State Patrol is working to lower crashes with trucks and buses, and at the same time increase safety. The enforcement is part of Operation Safe Driver Week.<br />
<br />
Colorado State Patrol and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration are putting emphasis on driving safely with large trucks and buses.<br />

<p dir="ltr"><b>WHY</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">Operation Safe Driver was created to help to combat the number of deaths<br>
resulting from crashes involving large trucks, buses and cars. During<br>
Operation Safe Driver Week, October 19-25, 2014, events will be held in the<br>
United States, Canada and Mexico with the goal of increasing commercial<br>
vehicle and non-commercial vehicle traffic enforcement; safety-belt<br>
enforcement; driver roadside inspections; and driver regulatory compliance.<br>
Since education is also an important component of Operation Safe Driver<br>
Week, law enforcement and transportation safety officials will offer<br>
educational and awareness safety programs to the motor carrier population<br>
and the motoring public.</p>

<p dir="ltr"><b>DETAILS</b></p>
<p dir="ltr">*         Members of the media are invited to witness a North American<br>
Standard Level I Inspection conducted by a CVSA-certified member of law<br>
enforcement, as well as a “No Zone” demonstration to indicate the areas<br>
around large trucks and buses that create dangers for car and truck drivers.<br>
The Level I Inspection is the most thorough roadside inspection. It is a<br>
37-step procedure that includes an examination of both the driver and<br>
vehicle. The officer will narrate the inspection process and answer any<br>
questions about the inspection procedure. Both a truck and motorcoach<br>
provided by Greyhound will be available at the event.</p>
<p dir="ltr">*         Members of the media can participate in a “ride-along.” Media<br>
will go out on the highway in a commercial vehicle driven by a professional<br>
truck driver, along with a member of law enforcement, to witness enforcement<br>
actions taken against unsafe driving behaviors by other drivers around the<br>
truck. The vehicle is being provided by <b><a href="http://cdlcollege.com">CDL College</a></b> in Commerce City,<br>
Colorado.</p>
<p dir="ltr">*         The Colorado Motor Carriers Association will be hosting a cookout<br>
for all attendees following the press conference, good-weather dependent.</p>

Air/Electric Lines</h3>
<ul>
<li>Listen for air leaks. </li>
<li>Check that air hose and electrical lines are not cut, chafed, spliced.</li>
<li>Make sure air and electrical lines are not</li>
<li>pinched, or dragging against tractor parts</li>
<li>Check that electrical plug is firmly locked in place on both tractor and trailer.</li>
<li>Check that air connectors are sealed on both tractor and trailer.</li>
<li>Mounting Bolts. Look for loose or missing mounting clamps, bolts, or nuts.</li>
<li>Locking Jaws. Look into fifth wheel gap and check that jaws are fully closed around the kingpin.</li>
<li>Fifth Wheel Skid Plate. Check fifth wheel skid plate for proper lubrication and mounted to the platform. Also ensure that all bolts are secure and not missing.</li>
<li>Platform. Check for cracks or breaks in the platform that supports the fifth wheel skid plate.</li>
</ul>

<b>Release Arm and Safety Latch</b></div>

<li>Make sure the release arm is in engaged position and the safety latch is in place.</li>
</ul>

<h4>
Kingpin/Apron/Gap</h4>
<ul>
<li>Check that the kingpin is not bent.</li>
<li>Make sure the visible part of the apron is not bent,</li>
<li>cracked, or broken.</li>
<li>Check that the trailer is laying flat on the fifth wheel</li>
<li>skid plate (no gap).</li>
</ul>

Sliding Fifth Wheel Locking Pins</h4>
<br />
<ul>
<li>If equipped, look for loose or missing pins in the slide mechanism of the sliding fifth wheel. If air powered, check for leaks.</li>
<li>Make sure locking pins are fully engaged.</li>
<li>Check that the fifth wheel is positioned properly so that the tractor frame will clear the landing gear during tuns.</li>

The CDL tester will score the amount of occasions you touch or go over a boundary line with any part of your truck. Each encroachment will count as an error.You will be given the opportunity to exit the vehicle once per maneuver to check the area for vehicle position.<br />
<br />
However, an excessive number of pull-ups, looks, or encroachments will result the outcome of the basic skill tests.<br />
<br />
It is important that you complete each exercise exactly as the tester has instructed you. If you fail to maneuver the truck into its final position you actually receive a penalty.<br />
<br />
A CDL Driver may be asked to back their truck or bus into an alley dock. You'll need to bring the rear of your truck or bus as<br />
close as to the back of the alley dock, without going over the exercise boundary. The boundary will be marked<br />
by a line of cones.<br />
