CDL College: medical waiver

Only Certified Medical Examiners From Here on Out

On or after May 21, 2014, only Medical Professionals who are on the National Registry can do DOT physicals for CDL holders. You will need a DOT Physical before you can receive  <a href="http://www.garysjobboard.com/" target="_blank">CDL A Jobs</a>. 
 
The National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (National Registry) was developed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to improve highway safety and driver health by requiring that medical examiners be trained and certified to effectively determine whether a CMV driver meets FMCSA’s physical qualification standards. 
 
Effective May 21, 2014, per 49 CFR 391.42, only those medical examiners who are on the National Registry can perform DOT physicals for CDL holders. If a CDL holder submits a DOT medical certificate to the DMV that was done by a non-certified medical examiner and it was done after May 21, 2014, the DMV will not be able to accept the document. The individual will be required to get a new DOT physical that was done by a registered medical examiner.  This change only affects DOT physicals that are done on or after May 21, 2014. Any DOT physical that was done prior to May 21, 2014 will still be valid until its expiration date. 
 
As a reminder, per 49 CFR 391.23(m)(B), it is the employers responsibility to verify that any DOT physical 
performed on or after May 21, 2014 was done my a registered medical examiner . Additionally, per 49 CFR 391.51(6), the employer must put a note in the employees Driver Qualification file that the verification was done and when it was done.

To verify if a medical examiner is on the registry, using the same link, search for Colorado, then on the next search screen there will be a field to search by examiner name or examiner number. 
 
Please note that nothing has changed regarding the driver medical qualification requirements in 391.41. 
The National Registry only applies to CDL holders and does not apply to commercial drivers who are not required to hold a CDL. 
 
Below is a sample of the new DOT medical certificate that has a field for the examiners assigned National Registry Number. At this time you can disregard the Intrastate only and CDL fields. These fields will be used for future DOT enhancements.

Vision Waiver for CDL License-Colorado

Every once in awhile someone asks how to obtain a CDL if they have vision problems. It is possible to get a CDL with a vision waiver from the Colorado State Patrol. The first step is to obtain the paperwork. Take these documents to DMV. They will allow you to take the written test at motor vehicle. You will obtain your CDL instruction permit from DMV.

2. 3. Employer Authorization-The State Patrol Vision Waiver requires that you notify the State Patrol when you obtain your first job and any subsequent job. (included in link above) 
 
4. Take Vision Waiver papers to doctor. (included in link above) 
 
5. Take Vision Waiver papers and Employer Authorization to State Patrol office. Obtain waiver. 
 
6. Take Medical Card and Vision Waiver papers to Motor Vehicle and take the written test for the CDL to obtain CDL Instruction Permit. 
 
7. Attend CDL College. 
 
8. Pass CDL Skills Test at CDL College and deliver CDL Road Test Certificate to Motor Vehicle. This step will give you a CDL License. 
 
9. Find a job. Notify Colorado State Patrol of your new job.
