Only Certified Medical Examiners From Here on Out

On or after May 21, 2014, only Medical Professionals who are on the National Registry can do DOT physicals for CDL holders. You will need a DOT Physical before you can receive  <a href="http://www.garysjobboard.com/" target="_blank">CDL A Jobs</a>.<br />
<br />
The National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners (National Registry) was developed by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to improve highway safety and driver health by requiring that medical examiners be trained and certified to effectively determine whether a CMV driver meets FMCSA’s physical qualification standards.<br />
<br />
Effective May 21, 2014, per 49 CFR 391.42, only those medical examiners who are on the National Registry can perform DOT physicals for CDL holders. If a CDL holder submits a DOT medical certificate to the DMV that was done by a non-certified medical examiner and it was done after May 21, 2014, the DMV will not be able to accept the document. The individual will be required to get a new DOT physical that was done by a registered medical examiner.  This change only affects DOT physicals that are done on or after May 21, 2014. Any DOT physical that was done prior to May 21, 2014 will still be valid until its expiration date.<br />
<br />
As a reminder, per 49 CFR 391.23(m)(B), it is the employers responsibility to verify that any DOT physical<br />
performed on or after May 21, 2014 was done my a registered medical examiner . Additionally, per 49 CFR 391.51(6), the employer must put a note in the employees Driver Qualification file that the verification was done and when it was done.<br />

To verify if a medical examiner is on the registry, using the same link, search for Colorado, then on the next search screen there will be a field to search by examiner name or examiner number.<br />
<br />
Please note that nothing has changed regarding the driver medical qualification requirements in 391.41.<br />
The National Registry only applies to CDL holders and does not apply to commercial drivers who are not required to hold a CDL.<br />
<br />
Below is a sample of the new DOT medical certificate that has a field for the examiners assigned National Registry Number. At this time you can disregard the Intrastate only and CDL fields. These fields will be used for future DOT enhancements.<br />

Driving in a city environment is a challenge for the driver. Lack of attention and limited peripheral vision impede the driver's ability to maneuver around fixed objects. Fixed-Object Incidents (FOI) are not the most costly incidents for a company; but, they are the most numerous.  FOI show a pattern of inattentiveness and lack of peripheral vision on behalf of a driver. A driver should be given training immediately following a FOI for four reasons:</span><br />

<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">An attempt to reduce the risk of a future catastrophic incident. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Counter Measures-Providing training to a driver after a FOI shows the FMCSA, insurance companies and (god forbid) a litigating attorney the willingness of the carrier to invest in training and the willingness to promote a culture of safety. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Providing training to a driver, after a FOI, spreads throughout the driver population. The drivers may start a dialogue amongst themselves about the best practices regarding close quarters maneuvering. The drivers may even discuss <i>hotspots </i> on their local routes. They may share tips about how to approach specific stops along their routes. A driver dialogue is the best source way to prevent a FOI. </span></li>

Training is performed in a simulator, classroom and through live demonstrations while practicing on the driving range. In-the-field training (on location) can be added if desired. </span><br />

<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Drive or Back to the right. Drive or Back slightly to the right of center for better visibility in tight places. Avoid the blind side at all costs. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Reduce your speed. If you see an approaching hazard:: reduce speed for more reaction time </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">Realign the vehicle. Re-position the vehicle to lessen impact or prevent a collision.</span></li>

Vision Waiver for CDL License-Colorado

Every once in awhile someone asks how to obtain a CDL if they have vision problems. It is possible to get a CDL with a vision waiver from the Colorado State Patrol. The first step is to obtain the paperwork.
